We’ve had ’no strings attached’, ’friends with benefits’, ’ghosting’ and now ’benching’ - but what is it? It’s not quite as romantic as you’d think. If you’re a singleton nowadays, it can be hard to keep up with all the latest tech and the slang we use to descirbe our dating lives. There’s Tinder, Grindr, Bumble, Match.com - and that’s just when it comes to meeting people. When you find a date there are so many ’labels’ you can find attached to a budding relationship. Facebook official’, ’friends with benefits’, ’no strings attached’ are all things we’ve come to recognise.“Facebook官方爱人”、“炮友”、“没有附加关系”等等,我们都曾遇到过On the other side of the coin, there are the not-so-nice terms which have gained popularity. ’Ghosting’ is the practice of ignoring someone to fade them out completely. Benching’ is the new ’ghosting’“坐冷板凳”则是一种新型“玩失踪”According to New York Magazine’s Beta Male , there’s now a new way to describe potential suitors being absolutely horrible to us. Jason writes how he would receive texts from the man he was seeing but when it came to meeting up and going on dates, plans always seemed to miraculously fall through. It wasn’t until he found himself inadvertently doing the same to another person that he realised what was going on. Jason compares it to a sports team. While this person doesn’t quite know if they want to date you (or ’play in the team’, so to speak) they don’t want the possibility of dating you to disappear ever. So he or she puts you on the bench while they make their mind up.,他或她会将你放冷板凳,而他们还在做决定They’ll continue to WhatsApp you, like your Facebook statuses, ask you how your weekend was - but they won’t commit to making an eft to actually see you. Jason says: "It’s despicable, manipulative, selfish behavior — and something we’re all doing."Jason说:“这种行为是卑鄙、狡猾和自私的-却也是我们每个人都在做的事”美国科学家研究“起死回生术” -- :7:58 来源:chinadaily A groundbreaking trial to see if it is possible to regenerate the brains of dead people, has won approval from health watchdogs. A biotech company in the US has been granted ethical permission to recruit patients who have been declared clinically dead from a traumatic brain injury, to test whether parts of their central nervous system can be brought back to life. Scientists will use a combination of therapies, which include injecting the brain with stem cells and a cocktail of peptides, as well as deploying lasers and nerve stimulation techniques which have been shown to bring patients out of comas. The trial participants will have been certified dead and only kept alive through life support. They will be monitored several months using brain imaging equipment to look signs of regeneration, particularly in the upper spinal cord - the lowest region of the brain stem which controls independent breathing and heartbeat. The team believes that the brain stem cells may be able to erase their history and re-start life again, based on their surrounding tissue – a process seen in the animal kingdom in creatures like salamanders who can regrow entire limbs. Dr Ira Pastor, the CEO of Bioquark Inc. said: “This represents the first trial of its kind and another step towards the eventual reversal of death in our lifetime.“Bioquark”公司执行总裁艾拉·帕斯特士说:“这是人类首次进行此类实验,是我们在有生之年逆转死亡的又一次尝试"We just received approval our first subjects and we hope to start recruiting patients immediately from this first site – we are working with the hospital now to identify families where there may be a religious or medical barrier to organ donation.“我们刚得到批准,可以先对位受试者进行试验,我们希望能立刻开始招募病人,就从这里的第一个试验地点开始着手——我们现在正与院方携手,看看哪些家庭可能由于宗教或医疗限制不能捐献器官"To undertake such a complex initiative, we are combining biologic regenerative medicine tools with other existing medical devices typically used stimulation of the central nervous system, in patients with other severe disorders of consciousness.“为了开展如此复杂的试验,我们将运用生物再生医学方法,并结合其它通常用于刺激中枢神经系统的医疗手段,治疗患有其它严重意识障碍的病人"We hope to see results within the first two to three months."“我们希望在两三个月内看到结果”The ReAnima Project has just received approval in India, and the team plans to start recruiting patients immediately. The first stage, named 'First In Human Neuro-Regeneration #38; Neuro-Reanimation' will be a non-randomised, single group 'proof of concept' and will take place at Anupam Hospital in Rudrapur, Uttarakhand India. The peptides will be administered into the spinal cord daily via a pump, with the stem cells given bi-weekly, over the course of a 6 week period. Dr Pastor added: "It is a long term vision of ours that a full recovery in such patients is a possibility, although that is not the focus of this first study – but it is a bridge to that eventuality." Brain stem death is when a person no longer has any brain stem functions, and has permanently lost the potential consciousness and the capacity to breathe. A person is confirmed as being dead when their brain stem function is permanently lost. However, although brain dead humans are technically no longer alive, their bodies can often still circulate blood, digest food, excrete waste, balance hormones, grow, sexually mature, heal wounds, spike a fever, and gestate and deliver a baby. Recent studies have also suggested that some electrical activity and blood flow continues after brain cell death, just not enough to allow the whole body to function. And while human beings lack substantial regenerative capabilities in the central nervous system, many non-human species, such as amphibians and certain fish, can repair, regenerate and remodel substantial portions of their brain and brain stem even after critical life-threatening trauma.尽管人类中枢神经系统中缺少强劲的重生能力,但很多非人类物种,比如两栖动物和某些鱼类,甚至在大脑受到威胁生命的严重创伤之后,仍然可以自我修复、新生并重建大脑和脑干的很多部分“Through our study, we will gain unique insights into the state of human brain death, which will have important connections to future therapeutic development other severe disorders of consciousness, such as coma, and the vegetative and minimally conscious states, as well as a range of degenerative CNS conditions, including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease,” added Dr Sergei Paylian, Founder, President, and Chief Science Officer of Bioquark Inc.“Bioquark”公司创始人、总裁兼首席科学官谢尔盖·佩林士说:“通过这项独特的研究,我们可以深入了解人类大脑死亡的状况,对今后治疗其它严重意识障碍有重要影响,比如昏迷、植物状态、阿尔兹海默和帕金森等一系列中枢神经系统退化问题”Commenting on the trial, Dr Dean Burnett, a neuroscientist at the Cardiff University’s Centre Medical Education said: “While there have been numerous demonstrations in recent years that the human brain and nervous system may not be as fixed and irreparable as is typically assumed, the idea that brain death could be easily reversed seems very far-fetched, given our current abilities and understanding of neuroscience. Saving individual parts might be helpful but it's a long way from resurrecting a whole working brain, in a functional, undamaged state."“修复某几个部分也许还有可能,但要复活整个大脑,使其功能运转正常、完好无损,还有很长的路要走”Vocabularytraumatic: 创伤的cocktail: 鸡尾酒:混合物spike: 以尖物刺伤;阻止gestate: National Data Protection Commission (CNIL) found "many failures". The CNIL has now given Microsoft three months to comply with the act. A Microsoft executive said the company would "work closely" with the CNIL. By default, Windows collects various data on how it is used - this includes what apps are installed and how much time is spent within them, example. [Microsoft] is collecting excessive data, as these data are not necessary the operation of the service," said the CNIL. The authority also criticised the fact that an advertising ID is activated by default, which allows apps to monitor user browsing and then offer targeted ads. In the CNIL’s view, this has been done "without consent". Plus, data was being transferred outside the EU despite a Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) decision, in October last year, to prohibit this. We built strong privacy protections into Windows , and we welcome feedback as we continually work to enhance those protections," said David Heiner, Microsoft vice-president and deputy general counsel. We will work closely with the CNIL over the next few months to understand the agency’s concerns fully and to work toward solutions that it will find acceptable."“在接下来的几个月里,我们将和法国国家数据保护委员密切合作,从而完全了解该机构的担忧之处,并且努力拿出他们觉得可接受的解决方案”Mr Heiner added that a new privacy statement would be issued by the company next month and that it planned to adopt the Privacy Shield - a recently approved US-EU pact to allow data flow across the Atlantic. It is high time that companies are called to about the amount of data they collect about us without our consent," said Harmit Kambo, campaigns director at Privacy International.“隐私国际”的宣传总监哈米特·肯说道:“现在正是时候呼吁公司们算一算,微软到底在没有允许的情况下收集了我们多少数据”"Why do they need so much data about us, and why are they not open with us about it?"“为什么他们需要这么多关于我们的数据呢?为什么他们不对我们坦白这件事呢?”Mr Kambo added that he hoped other companies would also consider the implications of the CNIL’s decision. CNIL’s public notice to Microsoft Corporation should be a wake up call to all companies, that it’s unacceptable to hoover up their customers’ data without their consent," he said. When people say Apple has built things people didn't know they need, it's not really true. Apple has built things that meet the needs people have always had. More than any other consumer company, Apple gets what people really, fundamentally need. That's why announcements like last week's Apple Watch tend to have the cultural impact they do. When we think of needs and products we often go right to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, the ubiquitous theory that human needs manifest in a specific sequence, from base survival to the pinnacle of self-actualization. Marketers have spent decades figuring out at what level of Maslow's hierarchy their customers are stuck, and then offering products and marketing that need. Think of Campbell's "Mmm-mmm Good" campaign at one end and Lexus's "Relentless Pursuit of Perfection" at the other. If Maslow was right, brands needed to target a single need, satisfy it well, and be done. But it turns out that Maslow wasn't entirely right. My own research at rester Research has focused on synthesizing a much more complete and empirical description of people's fundamental needs based on research in psychology, economics, and neuroscience. When we talk about human needs, we use four categories: Crucially, we've learned that these needs are not hierarchical. Think of yourself: You don't wake up in the morning and only think about food, then worry about making money, then think about loftier pursuits. Neither your day nor your life unfolds like that. It's messier, because of our adaptive and clever biology. Our hormones, our neurotransmitters, even our gut bacteria cause us to think about base needs like survival and loftier ones like personal fulfillment simultaneously. In fact, they compete with one another our attention, and we prioritize and re-prioritize them on the fly, as context changes. Apple's understanding of this is what sets it apart when it comes to launching market-changing products, including the newly announced Apple Watch. Apple doesn't lock into one need on the hierarchy (soup that satisfies hunger, or perfect luxury car), but instead builds and markets products that connect on all four of the human needs that we're grappling with constantly. Let's use the Apple Watch as an example: A huge monument has been discovered buried under the sands at the Petra World Heritage site in southern Jordan. Archaeologists used satellite images, drone photography and ground surveys to locate the find, according to the study published in the American Schools of Oriental Research. (Bulletin of the American Schools of Oriental Research )报导称,The large platm is about as long as an Olympic swimming pool and twice as wide. Researchers say it is unlike any other structure at the ancient site. The study, by Sarah Parcak of the University of Alabama, Birmingham, and Christopher Tuttle, executive director of the Council of American Overseas Research Centers, describes the find as "hiding in plain sight". Petra dates back to the fourth century , when it was founded by the Nabataean civilization, who inhabited parts of what is now Jordan, Iraq, Syria and Lebanon. Surface pottery suggests the platm was built in the mid-second century , when Petra was at its peak. It is thought the structure may have had a ceremonial purpose. The survey also revealed a smaller platm was contained inside the larger one, which was once lined with columns on one side with a vast staircase on the other. Mr Tuttle told National Geographic that someone in decades of excavation "had to know" the structure was there yet it had not been written up.Mr Tuttle告诉国家地理的记者他相信在对佩特拉古城的两个世纪的研究过程中,一定有人知道这座遗迹的存在,只是没有进行过系统性研究或详细记载"I’ve worked in Petra years, and I knew that something was there, but it’s certainly legitimate to call this a discovery."“我已经在佩特拉古城研究了年,我知道古城中一定存在许多古老的遗迹,但这个遗迹完全称得上是一项发现”Hundreds of thousands of tourists visit Petra each year, although numbers have been hit by the conflict against so-called Islamic State. The site is best-known the Treasury Building, which is carved from sandstone and featured in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

A bear savaged the arm of a boy who tried to feed the animal through its cage in central China on Sunday. The accident happened when the nine-year-old attempted to give it food through the bars of its cage, said a doctor and state media. The boy was pushing his arm into the bear enclosure at Pingdingshan Hebin Park in Henan province, when the animal caught hold of him. Medical staff at Pingdingshan Number treated the child and a doctor said that the boy had lost his entire right arm, which needed to be amputated. Bear attacks are rare although according to the Journal of Emergency Medicine, there were bear-inflicted injuries reported in the US between 1900 and 1985. This amounts to two reported bear-inflicted injuries per year. Jeffrey Tittel, director of environmental organization New Jersey Sierra Club, said bears were usually are docile and afraid of people. He noted however that most bear attacks were related to people having food. Most bears will avoid people, Tittel said, but bears that have been fed or exposed to food from humans, see people as a source of food and can become aggressive. 泰特尔说大多数黑熊都不会袭击人类,但在人们喂食时或当它们接近人们手中的食物时黑熊会把人类当作食物,变得具有攻击性 "Ten years ago, we were spending over $.5m (£1.6m) a year on bear education and now we are spending a th of that," said Tittel, adding that New Jersey has been using a hunting instead of a bear management plan. Animal experts report that wild bears are exhibiting a new behavior pattern by not going into hibernation during the winter period, raising the concern of increased numbers of man-animal conflict. DVS Khati, chief wildlife warden told Times of India: "The behavioral change in bears where their hibernation activity has drastically reduced is not only confined to Uttarak hand, but is a global phenomenon. There are several reasons responsible it; global warming is another reason.
